Canmore had two beavers destroyed at Spring Creek after reports of flooding risk and cut trees. The habitat is still there, so new beavers will find it, and the Town is now considering pond levellers - the option that works without the killing.

The Bow Valley Latin Community marks its first Fiestas Patrias on 18 September, with a free lunch at the library, an outdoor festival and a late party at Sizzlers. Registration is required for the daytime events, so sort that out before the date rather than on the day.

If the Icefields Parkway is on your list this month, the Columbia Icefield stop is the one that needs planning. The all-terrain vehicle takes you out onto the Athabasca Glacier itself, and the Skywalk puts you on a glass floor 280 metres above the valley. Both run on timed slots, and turning up without one rarely goes well in September.

For somewhere that puts you in the mountains rather than simply looking at them, Sunshine Mountain Lodge goes a step further. A 20-minute gondola ride is the only way in - no road, no parking lot - which leaves you with alpine meadows and glacial lakes in summer and ski-in access in winter, and a fair distance between you and everyone else in the valley.

🚧 Bow River Bridge Down to One Lane. Water main inspections close a lane from 6 a.m. on 8 September, lasting the full day. Large trucks and buses coming from Spray Avenue will be detoured onto Cave Avenue to make the turn.

🏃 Terry Fox Run Returns to Banff. Registration opens at 9 am on 20 September for a non-competitive 1 to 10 km course. The run has so far raised $9,659 of its $25,100 goal, two-thirds of it from one participant.

🎬 Banff Film Festival Screens in Jasper. The world tour returns for two screenings at the Jasper Activity Centre on 18 and 19 September, its first there in years. The grand door prize is two Rocky Mountaineer tickets.

🌧️ A soggy long weekend settles in and holds well into next week - Saturday brings a chance of showers at a cool 13°C, Sunday turns to steady showers at 15°C, and Labour Day Monday continues with more showers, warming slightly to 17°C. 🐻 Bold Grizzly on Skoki Trails. Parks Canada has issued a bear warning for Skoki Lodge, Hidden Lake, Baker Lake and Deception Pass. The bear is approaching people. Travel in groups of four or more and carry bear spray.

🚲 E-Bike and Hike to Johnston Canyon - The motor does the climbing, so you can cover 26km of the Bow Valley Parkway without wrecking your legs, then walk up to the Lower Falls. Groups cap at seven, and a van brings you home.

🌉 Yoho Day Trip and Golden Skybridge - A long one at twelve hours, but you get Emerald Lake, the Natural Bridge and Takakkaw Falls before crossing Canada's highest suspension bridges at Golden. Zipline and coaster cost extra.

⛏️ Canmore History Tour - Before Canmore was cafes and climbers, it was coal. Ninety minutes on foot from the Rec Centre tells you about the miners and cowboys who built the place, on flat trails and old-town streets.

👨‍👩‍👧 Is Bankhead Ghost Town a good activity for families with young children? It's one of the more family-friendly spots in Banff - flat, short, and full of things to look at, making the Bankhead Ghost Town walk a good choice for kids.

🏨 Can you visit the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel without staying overnight? Yes - day visitors can dine and book a spa treatment. Plan your day.

🚧 What happened to Nakoda the white grizzly bear? Nakoda died in 2024 after a collision with a vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway - her story highlights the serious dangers roads pose to wildlife in the Rockies.
