Ten grizzlies have been shot in Alberta this year under a provincial policy that lets private hunters kill bears that become habituated or go after livestock. Last year the figure was one. The species has been listed as threatened in the province since 2010.

There is a modest counterweight arriving the same week. A new $75 licence plate goes on sale on 1 September, showing two bighorn rams below Mount Lougheed, with $55 of every one going to the Alberta Conservation Association.

Evenings are still warm enough for the horse-drawn wagon ride along the Bow River out to a backcountry cookout, where the steak is grilled to order over the fire. Departures are limited each night, so it is not a walk-up situation.

Getting back into town late is easier if you are not then driving out of it. Mount Royal Hotel sits in the middle of Banff Avenue, with shops, restaurants and bus stops directly outside the door and a rooftop hot tub facing the mountains.

🐻 Ten Grizzlies Killed This Year. A provincial policy letting private hunters shoot habituated, or livestock-killing, bears has claimed 10 grizzlies in 2026, up from one last year. The species has been listed as threatened in Alberta since 2010.

🚗 New Plate Funds Alberta Conservation. A $75 licence plate available 1 September sends $55 to the Alberta Conservation Association. The design shows two bighorn rams below Mount Lougheed. BC's version has sold 630,000 plates since 2017, raising $12.5 million last year alone.

❄️ First Snow Lands at Sunshine. Banff Sunshine, Kicking Horse and Panorama all picked up snow above 7,500 feet on Sunday, ahead of Alberta's usual late-September first dusting. Forecasts above freezing mean it won't stick around.

🏕️ Jasper Loses Its Last-Minute Camping. Six first-come, first-served campgrounds, including Snaring, move to online reservations in 2027, and locals have petitioned against it. Parks Canada has already converted Rampart Creek and Silverhorn Creek in Banff.

🐻 Rockwall Trail Bear Warning Expanded. The warning issued for Floe Lake and Numa Pass on 26 August now covers the entire trail. A grizzly and two cubs are investigating bear-proof food lockers and staying close to hikers.

🌧️ September rolls in with a sharp cool-down and a wet spell - Wednesday brings a chance of showers and a thunderstorm risk at 24°C, before Thursday cools sharply to just 14°C with a 70% chance of showers, and Friday stays cloudy and cool at 16°C. Full Forecast Here

🚴 Skip the parking scramble at Johnston Canyon. Take the Bow Valley Parkway by e-bike instead, then hike to the Lower Falls and shuttle back - no lot circling, no early alarm. Full details here.

🧊 Columbia Icefield and Skywalk - Ride a six-wheeled Ice Explorer onto the Athabasca Glacier, then walk the glass-floored Skywalk above the Sunwapta Valley. Around three hours all in; parking can get busy, so aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before your booking.

🚡 Jasper SkyTram - Seven and a half minutes gets you to 2,263 metres on Whistlers Mountain, with a boardwalk and cafe at the top. Carry on up the 1.4 km summit trail for six mountain ranges. Pack layers.

👻 Banff Ghost Walks - Meet outside the Good Earth Coffeehouse at 7 pm and spend 100 minutes hearing about unsolved crimes and Banff's stranger history. It's outdoors throughout, so bring a jacket.
