Parks Canada's international design competition to redevelop the east 200-block of Banff Avenue has drawn national attention - and local controversy. The $50-$60 million project aims to create a modern visitor hub, new public space and possibly an underground parkade, a move that's dividing opinion.

Town officials argue an underground facility would bring more cars into the core, contradicting Banff's long-term plan for intercept parking on the outskirts, combined with better transit, cycling and pedestrian routes.
