🌟 What's On Banff - Events, Activities, Live Music & Good News! 😊
Hi Everyone! Here's What’s Happening This Week!
Big changes could be coming to Banff’s downtown - and not everyone’s on board. Parks Canada’s international design competition is exploring new ideas for the east 200-block of Banff Avenue, including a potential underground parkade. Some love the vision, others say it goes against Banff’s green goals.
On a brighter note, Lake Louise is celebrating after being named Canada’s Best Ski Resort - yet again! And if you’re looking to get outdoors before the deep snow hits, the Bow River Loop Trail in Canmore is in great shape right now for a crisp, scenic stroll along the water.
Plus, the Fairmont Banff Springs is giving you the chance to celebrate in style with a competition for a luxury mountain getaway.
From fresh snow to big news, there’s plenty to talk about in Banff, Canmore, and beyond. Dive into the week’s stories and upcoming events below.

🏞️ Your Questions
Could I move to Banff if I love the mountains?
Not unless you meet Parks Canada's "need-to-reside" rule. Because Banff sits inside a national park, only people who work, study, or run a business there - and their dependents - are allowed to live in town. Even property buyers need approval, as all land is leasehold and vacation homes aren't permitted.
If you've dreamed of calling Banff home, it's worth learning how these rules work - and why nearby Canmore might be a more flexible option.

🏗️ Design Competition Sparks Debate Over Banff's Downtown Future
Parks Canada's international design competition to redevelop the east 200-block of Banff Avenue has drawn national attention - and local controversy. The $50-$60 million project aims to create a modern visitor hub, new public space and possibly an underground parkade, a move that's dividing opinion.
Town officials argue an underground facility would bring more cars into the core, contradicting Banff's long-term plan for intercept parking on the outskirts, combined with better transit, cycling and pedestrian routes. Roughly 20 percent of downtown traffic comes from drivers hunting for spaces, and 78 percent of residents oppose adding more parking in the centre.
The competition closed on August 12, with up to six finalists now preparing detailed concepts for review by a jury from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. The outcome could define how Banff balances visitor access with environmental goals - and whether its iconic downtown welcomes fewer cars or a new underground parkade.
