Hi Everyone! Here's Whatโ€™s Happening This Week!

Downtown Canmore had a bear situation on Saturday afternoon. Wildlife officers and RCMP responded to reports of a bear near Mountain View Estates on Policemanโ€™s Creek Trail just after 2 pm. A cub was darted on 7th Avenue. The mother, apparently unimpressed with the whole operation, left on her own terms.

If you live in the Bow Valley, this week is a good time to take advantage of the Banff Gondola, Lake Minnewanka Cruise, or the Columbia Icefield Adventure for $5 per guest. The locals' access offer runs until 30 May, with proceeds going to the Pursuit Community Fund.

Sunshine Village has confirmed summer skiing from 20 June to 5 July - Strawberry Express and the Summer Terrain Park are the planned open terrain, with lift tickets at $80 adult. Sightseeing season starts on 6 July.

For something that moves at a different pace entirely, the Wagon Ride and Cowboy Cookout takes you along the Bow River by horse-drawn wagon, stops for a steak cooked to order in the backcountry, and gets you back to the stables feeling like you've actually done something worthwhile with your afternoon.

This is a great way to experience a little of Banffโ€™s ranching history while enjoying a BBQ steak lunch in the mountains. Instead of the usual sightseeing tour, youโ€™ll travel by horse-drawn wagon along trails beside the Bow River and beneath Sulphur Mountain, with wide views of the surrounding mountains.

About halfway through the ride, the wagon stops at a backcountry cookout spot where your steak is cooked to order and served with roasted potatoes, cowboy baked beans, coleslaw, buns, and dessert.

Afterwards, you can relax by the fire, try a little lassoing, or play horseshoes before settling back in for the scenic ride through forest and meadow on the way back to the stables.

๐Ÿ”๏ธ Hotels That Actually Work for Families

Banff with kids is brilliant in theory and slightly chaotic in practice - the logistics of keeping everyone fed, entertained, and not melting down in a crowded car park can test even the most organised parent. These three properties take a fair amount of that friction off your plate.

๐Ÿก Hidden Ridge Resort - Up on Tunnel Mountain, this condo-style resort is basically the antidote to "where are we going to eat tonight" - every unit comes with a full kitchen, a wood-burning fireplace, and enough space that siblings don't have to share a wall. There's a free shuttle into town so you're not fighting for parking, hot tubs the kids will never want to leave, an outdoor play area, and BBQ stations if you fancy feeding four people for the cost of a single Banff restaurant starter. ๐ŸŠ Lake Louise Inn - Staying in Lake Louise village means the lake is genuinely close rather than an hour's queue for the shuttle - and this property earns its family credentials with a heated indoor pool, three hot tubs, a pizza and pasta cafe that children will actually eat at, free mini golf in summer, and children under 17 staying free. It's not the Chateau, but your children won't notice, and your credit card will be quietly relieved. Read The Reviews And Book

๐Ÿฐ Fairmont Banff Springs - Yes, it costs what it costs. But for a full-scale family blowout, few places deliver like this one - there are two heated saltwater pools (indoor and outdoor), a bowling alley, a "Kids @ The Castle" programme with scavenger hunts and nature safaris, and Gatehouse Rooms with actual bunk beds built in. Twelve dining options mean someone can always find something to eat without negotiation. If you're going to do Banff properly once, this is how. Read The Reviews And Book

Travelling without a car? It's still easy to get between Canmore and Banff. Find out how.
