Hi Everyone! Here's What’s Happening This Week!

Booking a campsite in the Rockies has started to feel less like planning and more like queuing. Spot Watch tries to even the odds, monitoring fully booked Alberta campgrounds and alerting you the moment a cancellation opens a spot. It does not hold the site for you, so the alert marks the start of a race rather than the end of one, but that beats refreshing the booking page by hand.

Rules, it turns out, apply even at altitude. Alpine Helicopters has been penalised for dumping fuel-soaked snow on Crown land after a 2023 crash near Saskatchewan Glacier, reportedly to shave 30 minutes off a flight.

For anyone whose plans are simpler than a glacier landing, the Moraine Lake and Lake Louise half-day tour is worth a look. Both lakes are a genuine headache to reach alone, between the parking limits at Louise and the vehicle ban at Moraine, and the tour quietly removes the part of the day you were going to spend stuck in a car.

When you are done, the Fairmont Banff Springs sits just up the river: the stone castle you have likely already photographed without knowing its name, and a fitting place to end a day.

If you’re curious about the grand stone “castle” overlooking Banff, this is it. The Fairmont Banff Springs has been welcoming travellers for more than a century and remains one of the most recognisable hotels in the Canadian Rockies. It sits just above the Bow River, a short drive from downtown, giving you mountain views in every direction.

Staying here is as much about the setting as the hotel itself. You’re close enough to town for an easy visit, but the hotel grounds feel tucked into the mountains, with walking trails and viewpoints just outside the door.

🏔️ Fresh from the Rockies

🚁 Helicopter Firm Fined for Dumping. Alpine Helicopters crashed near Saskatchewan Glacier in 2023, then a whistleblower revealed crews dumped fuel-soaked snow on Crown land to save 30 minutes' flight time. The initial $43,043 penalty was cut to $18,550.

🏕️ Alberta Parks Revives Campsite Alerts. Spot Watch monitors fully booked campgrounds and notifies you the moment a cancellation opens a site. The catch: it reserves nothing, so you are racing every other camper who got the same alert.

🌧️ Streamflow Advisory for Canmore Creeks. Roughly 70 mm of rain is forecast for Sunday and Monday, prompting a high streamflow advisory for Canmore's steep creeks. The Bow River, the town reckons, will stay within its normal range.

🪶 Morleyville Trail Opens This Weekend. A new interpretive trail at Historic Morleyville opens June 27 with a Pipe Ceremony at noon, sharing Îyârhe Stoney and settler histories of the land. Five years in the making; refreshments after.

🦇 Probiotics Deployed Against Bat Plague. Parks Canada is spreading fungi-fighting bacteria in Jasper caves to slow white-nose syndrome, which can kill 98 per cent of a colony. One Jasper cave counted 69 dead this March, against three in each of the past two years.

🌩️ Three days of wet weather, with a side of drama - Saturday's rain comes with a thunderstorm risk and a high of 15°C, Sunday eases into steadier showers at 14°C, and Monday brings cloud with a 60% chance of showers but a welcome climb to 19°C.Full Forecast Here

🐻 Multiple Bear Warnings Across Kananaskis. A family of grizzlies tore open a tent at Lower Lake Campground, while another approached a hiker near Rummel Lake. June fills the valleys with people and bears at once.

🚣Activities You Might Enjoy

🌉 Yoho Sights: Golden Skybridge, Emerald Lake & Takakkaw Falls - Fancy a big day west of Banff? This 12-hour trip takes in Emerald Lake's glacial blue, Takakkaw Falls at 373 metres, and a walk across Canada's highest suspension bridges. Pack a windproof shell - it's much colder up high.

🦌 Banff Wildlife Tour - Why not head out at dusk, when elk and bighorn sheep are most active? This relaxed three-hour run visits Lake Minnewanka, Bow Falls and Surprise Corner, with a small-group wildlife and history tour built for spotting. Layer up - it cools fast after sunset.

Lake Minnewanka Cruise - If you'd rather take it easy, this hour-long cruise across Banff's largest lake glides towards Devil's Gap over a flooded ghost town below. Bring a windproof jacket - it's far breezier on the water than in town.

❓Your Questions Answered

💧 Is Takakkaw Falls worth a detour from Banff? Absolutely. It is one of Canada's most dramatic waterfalls, and the trail is flat, short, and suitable for all fitness levels.

🏔️ How does Canmore compare to Banff for family-friendly hiking? Canmore's easy trails are right in town, free to access, and less crowded than Banff's popular routes - making it a genuinely practical choice for families with young children.

👨‍👩‍👧 Is Bankhead Ghost Town a good activity for families with young children? It's one of the more family-friendly spots in Banff - flat, short, and full of things to look at, making the Bankhead Ghost Town walk a great choice for kids.

🌿Glamping Picks Beyond the Banff Bubble

Most visitors default to Banff town for accommodation and spend half their trip dealing with the consequences - parking queues, busy restaurants, and hotel bills that require a sit-down afterwards. These three Kananaskis properties offer a quieter alternative, with the mountains still firmly in view.

🏔️ Mount Engadine Lodge - About an hour from Canmore along Spray Lakes Road, in the kind of remote that most Banff visitors never reach. All meals included - breakfast, a packed lunch for the trail, and a three-course dinner each evening. Glamping tents have gas fireplaces, ensuite bathrooms with hot showers, and private balconies. Bikes and snowshoes available for guests. Pets welcome.

🏕️ Skyridge Glamping - Adults-only eco-cabins in Kananaskis Country, about an hour from both Calgary and Banff. The SkyGlass cabins have floor-to-ceiling windows, king beds, gourmet kitchens, and a spa with a sauna on site. Free parking. If you're going to call it glamping, this is what that actually looks like.

🌲 Sundance by Basecamp - Canvas tents and tipis alongside the Kananaskis River, about an hour from Banff. Shared showers, no Wi-Fi, outhouses - it's honest about what it is. Firepits, river walks, and a small trading post on site. The most accessible price point of the three, and a solid option for families.

🏕️ Quiz

Yesterday’s Question: What is the main street that runs through the town of Banff?

Answer: B) Banff Avenue - 79% Correct

Banff Avenue is back to two-way traffic after losing its summer pedestrian zone. Learn how the change affects visitors and locals.

Moraine Lake and Lake Louise are two of the most popular Banff destinations, but Moraine Lake has no private vehicle access, and parking at Lake Louise is extremely limited. This half-day tour removes those hurdles by including round-trip transport from Banff and handling access for you.
