Hi Everyone! Here's What’s Happening This Week!

Five shows in, and Banff's skijoring run is finished. The tourism board has ended the SnowDays fixture that sent a horse down a snow-packed course with a skier in tow, though Skijor Canada says 2027 is in the works somewhere else.

Less easy to relocate are the glaciers. A new Parks Canada report projects three to six degrees of warming for the park, drier summers, more wildfire risk, and at least 75 per cent of glaciers gone by 2100 - Peyto has already pulled back 500 metres since 2019.

On a lighter note, Golf Digest has put Banff Springs at No. 9 and Jasper Park at No. 3 in its latest Canada ranking.

If you would rather earn your views by pedal, the Johnston Canyon e-bike and walking tour folds a ride, a canyon walk, and a shuttle back into one half-day - the kind of outing that looks like effort and mostly isn't.

🏔️ Got questions about planning your Rockies trip?

Every week, readers email us asking where to stay, what to prioritise, and how to make the most of their time here. We've put together a one-to-one consultation service so we can answer those questions properly - tailored to your trip, not a generic list. Learn More.

This tour brings together a bike ride, a canyon walk, and a scenic drive into one easy half-day. The e-bikes make it possible to enjoy the views without it feeling like a workout. You’ll ride at a relaxed pace through places such as Vermilion Lakes and along the Bow Valley Parkway.

At Johnston Canyon, the focus shifts from riding to walking. The bikes are left behind, and you follow the trail on foot to the Lower Falls with time to enjoy the canyon scenery. You then return to Banff via shuttle.

🏔️ Fresh from the Rockies

Three Sisters Peaks tower over the Bow River, Canmore

🐴 Skijoring Leaves Banff After Five Shows. Banff and Lake Louise Tourism's board has ended the town's skijoring run, the SnowDays fixture that sent a horse thundering down a snow-packed course with a skier in tow. Skijor Canada says 2027 is already in the works - just somewhere else.

🌡️ Banff Faces Three to Six Degrees of Warming. A new Parks Canada report projects significant temperature rises for the national park over the coming decades, with drier summers, higher wildfire risk, and at least 75 per cent of glaciers lost by 2100. Peyto Glacier has already retreated 500 metres since 2019.

🏎️ British Cars Come to Canmore in September. The Canmore Highland Games adds a British Car Show to its September 5-6 programme, with classic and performance vehicles on display alongside the piping, dancing, and heavy events.

🏌️ Banff and Jasper Crack the Top 10. Golf Digest's latest Canada ranking puts Banff Springs at No. 9 and Jasper Park at No. 3, with Mount Rundle's cliffs towering 3,000 feet over the fairways at the former.

🐟 Parks Canada Counts Trout at Night. A three-year egg-collection programme at Marvel Lake has released westslope cutthroat trout into Cascade Creek to restore a native population. Monitoring is done by snorkel after dark, when the fish are easier to spot.

🌦️ A slow cool-down rolls into Banff this week - Thursday brings a mix of sun and cloud near 22°C, Friday dips to 17°C with a 40% shower chance, and Saturday settles into cloudy 16°C with showers becoming the running theme. Full Forecast Here

🦌 Buck Freed From Banff Fence. A young deer tangled in wire was freed by Banff Fire and Parks Rescon, who calmed it and pried the pole loose. The crew first had to clear it with Parks Canada, the fence sitting within park jurisdiction.

🚣Activities You Might Enjoy

🚤 Maligne Lake Cruise & Wildlife - Spend six hours deep in Jasper's Maligne Valley, watching for elk, moose and bears before a 90-minute cruise out to Spirit Island. Bring a waterproof shell - those glacial winds off the water bite even in summer.

🍴 Banff Food Tour - Skip the trial-and-error of finding decent food in a resort town. This three-hour wander through 4-6 local eateries covers poutine, a proper Caesar and locally made fudge, with plenty of Banff history between bites. Comfy shoes advised.

🐻 Boo, Kicking Horse Grizzly Refuge - Fancy a guaranteed grizzly sighting? This full day out visits Boo at his mountainside refuge near Golden, with Takakkaw Falls, Emerald Lake and the Spiral Tunnels along the way. Lunch included, served at altitude.

❓Your Questions Answered

🎟️ Do I need to pay to park even if I have a national park pass? Yes - your park pass covers park entry, but parking in Banff town centre is charged separately, year-round.

🤍 Was there really a white grizzly bear in Banff? Yes - a rare white-coated grizzly known as Nakoda lived in Banff and Yoho National Parks, and her story became one of the most closely followed wildlife tales in the Canadian Rockies.

🌄 What can you see from the top of Tunnel Mountain? The summit offers sweeping views across Banff townsite, the Bow Valley, and surrounding peaks - impressive for a hike you can do before lunch.

🦌 Where to Stay in Jasper Without Spending a Week Finding Out

Jasper fills up fast, and the good options go faster. These three cover different budgets and different priorities, but all of them have a reason to exist beyond just having a bed available.

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge - The one that started as a tent camp in 1915 and somehow ended up with a world-ranked golf course, a 10,000 square foot spa, and elk wandering the grounds. About 2km from town on 700 acres of Lac Beauvert shoreline - close enough to dip into Jasper, far enough to ignore it entirely if you'd rather.

🏨 The Crimson Jasper - In town, on foot from everything that matters - restaurants, the VIA Rail station, the park information centre. No shuttle, no parking drama, no ten-minute drive every time you want a coffee. The room is the base; the national park is the point.

🌲 Pyramid Lake Lodge - Six kilometres up Pyramid Lake Road and worth every one of them. Sits directly on the lake with kayak and canoe rentals on-site, plus an on-site restaurant, and a quietness that Jasper town stops being able to offer sometime around Canada Day. Bring a car and leave the crowds to everyone else.

Yesterday’s Question: What year was Banff National Park established?

Answer: A) 1885 - 46% Correct

Banff became Canada’s first national park in 1885, with the Banff Springs Hotel opening just three years later.

For many visitors, seeing Moraine Lake means juggling shuttle bookings and tight time windows. Staying at Moraine Lake Lodge removes that altogether. Guests are able to drive directly to the lake, which makes arrival simpler and gives you far more flexibility during your stay.
