Hi Everyone! Here's What’s Happening This Week!
A coyote family has set up under a backyard shed in Banff, and Parks Canada is asking people to keep dogs close along Bow Falls Trail, Glen Avenue and Spray Avenue. The same street had denning coyotes biting dogs back in 2018, so the caution is earned rather than precautionary.
The Fenlands Trail is open again after its closure. "Open" is accurate; "dry" would be a stretch. Jill did not enjoy this walk #wetfeet.
Over in Canmore, the Carter-Ryan Theatre is premiering a musical about Cheezies. Someone wrote songs about a puffed corn snack; it runs from June 25, and we have given up trying to explain it.
If Johnston Canyon is on your list, staying at the lodge right beside the trailhead is the simplest way to walk it before the buses arrive and the parking fills. Early and quiet, or late and quiet, with none of the morning drive from town.

🏔️ Banff Trip Planning Consultation
Not sure where to stay? Wondering how many days you need? Trying to fit too much into your itinerary?
Book a 50-minute consultation with Jill for personalised advice on planning your Banff and Canadian Rockies trip. You'll also receive a written summary and follow-up email support.
Staying here puts you right at the start of the Johnston Canyon trail, so you can head into the canyon before the crowds arrive, or enjoy it later once the tour buses have gone. It also avoids the challenge of finding parking, which often fills early during busy periods.
Johnston Canyon Lodge & Bungalows sits along the Bow Valley Parkway about 20 minutes from Banff, making it a convenient base between Banff and Lake Louise. After a day exploring the canyon and nearby sights, you can return to a peaceful forest setting with a café, market, and bistro on site.
🏔️ Fresh from the Rockies
🐺 Coyotes Move In Under a Shed. A coyote family is denning beneath a Banff backyard shed, prompting a Parks Canada warning for Bow Falls Trail, Glen Avenue and Spray Avenue. The same street saw denning coyotes bite several dogs back in 2018.
🥾 Fenlands Trail Reopens, Still Soggy. Banff's Fenlands Trail is back open, though as the video shows, "damp" is doing some heavy lifting. Bring boots you do not mind getting wet.
🪧 Plaques Stolen From War Memorial. Two bronze plaques were taken and the statue damaged at the Castle Mountain Internment Camp Memorial, which marks a First World War camp that held 660 people classed as enemy aliens.
🐏 Sheep Get Their Own Overpass. The new Radium Hot Springs wildlife overpass connects Kootenay National Park to the Columbia Wetlands, at 34 metres the widest crossing in BC outside a national park. Paired with fencing, it can cut collisions by more than 80 per cent.
🧀 A Musical About Cheezies. The Carter-Ryan Theatre in Canmore premieres The Cheezie Musical, an original Canadian production by Bridget Ryan and Morgan McKee, running June 25 to August 15. Somebody wrote songs about a puffed corn snack?
🌤️ The week starts sunny before the clouds roll in- a mix of sun and cloud Sunday (21°C) gives way to increasing cloudiness Monday (23°C), then a 60% chance of showers Tuesday - though still a comfortable 20°C. Full Forecast Here

And if Jasper is on your list, the Maligne Valley wildlife tour with its 90-minute cruise to Spirit Island handles the transport and timing for you - one of the easier ways to tick off that particular view.
🚣Activities You Might Enjoy
🥾 Johnston Canyon Guided Hike - Cantilevered catwalks over the canyon floor, a guide explaining how glacial meltwater carved the limestone, and the Upper Falls at the top. Five kilometres return - grippy footwear a good idea; the walkways get slick from the spray.
🏔️ Luxury Banff, Lake Louise & Castle Mountain Tour - Nine and a half hours covering Norquay, Minnewanka, the gondola, Upper Hot Springs, Bow Falls, and Surprise Corner, with a photographer along for the ride. It's a full day in the park without having to plan a thing.
🧗 Mount Norquay Via Ferrata - Steel cables and ladders bolted to the rock face, ten minutes from town, no climbing experience required. Tops out at 2,300 metres on the longer route - two options available depending on how much vertical you're after.
❓Your Questions Answered
🏔️ What will I actually see on Policeman's Creek Trail? Mountain views, wetlands, birdlife, and a couple of historic landmarks - it covers more ground than its easy reputation suggests.
👻 Is the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel actually haunted? The Ghost Bride and Sam the Bellman are said to roam the halls, and the full story is far stranger.
👀 Is it common to see wolves in Banff or Kananaskis? Sightings are rare - wolves are elusive by nature. What to do if you do encounter one is worth knowing before you go.
🗺️ Stay There, Not Nearby
The Rockies' most iconic spots reward visitors who arrive early and linger late - neither of which is easy when you're driving in from Banff or Lake Louise each day. These three properties put you exactly where you need to be.
🌲 Emerald Lake Lodge - Sitting on a 13-acre peninsula on the shores of Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, this lodge was originally built in 1902 and is about 20 minutes west of Lake Louise. There's no cell service on site, no in-room TVs, and WiFi only in the main lodge - a deliberate choice that either appeals to you immediately or rules it out entirely. Wood-burning fireplaces in every room, canoe rentals on the lake, and the Mount Burgess Dining Room for the evenings. Compare prices before you book
🏕️ Johnston Canyon Bungalows - Family-owned since 1926, these 42 heritage cabins sit right at the Johnston Canyon trailhead on the Bow Valley Parkway - roughly 20 minutes west of Banff. The property's own advice is to hit the trail before 8 am to avoid peak crowds, which is a lot more achievable when the trailhead is on your doorstep. Cabins range from studios to two-bedroom cottages with full kitchens; there's the BlackSwift Bistro on-site, and parking is free for guests. Compare prices before you book
🏔️ Moraine Lake Lodge - Moraine Lake Road has been closed to private vehicles since 2023 - the only exceptions are registered lodge guests. That means guests drive directly to the lake, park for free behind the lodge, and can walk the Rockpile trail at sunrise without booking a 4 am shuttle from Lake Louise. Open June to September only. Complimentary canoes, guided hikes, breakfast, light lunch, and afternoon tea are all included. Compare prices before you book
🏕️ Quiz

Which TV show featured the Canmore Engine Bridge?
Yesterday’s Question: Which of the following lakes is not located in Banff National Park?
✅ Answer: D) Emerald Lake - 60% Correct
It’s in Yoho National Park, just across the border in British Columbia.
The Banff Gondola is one of Banff’s most popular attractions. It offers an easy way to reach the summit of Sulphur Mountain without hiking. The short 8-minute ride leads to observation decks, a boardwalk, and an interpretive centre. For a special winter experience, head up at sunset and catch the Nightrise light show.
Book your ride for summit views without the hike!
