Hi Everyone! Here's What’s Happening This Week!

Some big updates this week - a little planning, a little policy, and a whole lot of huskies.

If Moraine Lake is on your radar for 2026, don't wait. Shuttle booking opens April 15 at 8:00 am MT, and it goes fast. We've got the step-by-step to help you beat the rush and secure your lakeside time.

Also new: Banff is extending its restriction on new large-scale events through Thanksgiving. The move is meant to ease tourism pressure during one of the busiest times of the year. Long-standing favourites will still happen, but don't expect any major new additions this fall.

And in the most feel-good news of the week: Snowy Owl's retiring sled dogs are ready for adoption. These hardworking pups are looking for calm, experienced homes to spend their golden years.

There is plenty more happening this week. Dive into the event listings below, or check out the detailed events page on our website.

Moraine Lake and Lake Louise are two of the most popular Banff destinations, but planning a visit can be surprisingly tricky. Moraine Lake has no private vehicle access, and parking at Lake Louise is extremely limited, especially in peak season.

This half-day tour removes those hurdles by including round-trip transport from Banff and handling access for you.

You get to spend around 90 minutes at each lake. This gives you time to walk the shoreline trails, take your photos of the turquoise water, and spend some time taking in the mountain views. With transport and timing taken care of, you can focus on the experience rather than the logistics.

🚧 Banff extends its ban on new large-scale events. To combat rising tourism pressures, council has expanded the peak-season restriction from the September long weekend to Thanksgiving. Existing fixtures like Melissa’s Road Race are grandfathered under the policy, while smaller community events remain unaffected.

πŸ’ Be a Pro Hockey Camp returns to Canmore. Aspiring U11 and U13 players can train with professional coaches at the recreation centre from 6–10 July. Secure discounted early registration until 31 January while supporting local youth sports and charities.

⛷️ Kids ski and ride for free at Marmot Basin. Children aged 12 and under receive complimentary lift tickets and equipment rentals every Monday to Friday throughout the season. Redeem this family-friendly offer at the mountain ticket windows.

🐾 Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours is seeking forever homes for its retired pack. Experienced owners can apply to adopt a husky hero and give these seasoned athletes a comfortable retirement in the Bow Valley.

🎸 Canmore Brewing Company marks nine years with a birthday bash. Help the local brewery celebrate on Saturday, 31 January, from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The event features live music and food trucks at their Railway Avenue taproom to toast nearly a decade of craft beer.

Water-Based Activities to Build Into Your Banff Trip

  1. Start with the Lake Minnewanka Cruise
This is one of the easiest water activities to fit into a Banff visit. The guided cruise on Lake Minnewanka gives you wide-open views, local history, and time on the water without any effort. It works well on an arrival day, a rest day, or when the weather is a bit unpredictable. No experience needed, just show up and enjoy the ride in Banff National Park.

  2. Paddle the Bow River in a Big Canoe
Plan this for a morning when the river is calm. The Big Canoe River Explorer tour on the Bow River is hands-on but relaxed, with guides doing most of the thinking. The canoes are stable, the pace is slow, and wildlife sightings are common. It’s a good choice if you want to be active without committing to anything intense.

  3. Add Whitewater Rafting in Kananaskis
If you want more adrenaline, book an afternoon whitewater rafting trip in Kananaskis Country. This adds variety to your trip and shows you a different side of the Rockies. It’s still beginner-friendly but feels like a proper adventure compared to lake activities.

  4. Choose a Fishing Charter Instead of Rafting
Prefer something quieter? A private fishing charter on Lake Minnewanka is a good alternative. It suits small groups and works well for a relaxed morning or evening on the water, especially if you enjoy focused, slower experiences.

  5. Plan an Easy Evening After
Water activities in Banff are tiring, even the calm ones. Keep evenings simple with dinner in town or a soak at the Banff Upper Hot Springs. Cold water and mountain air tend to make early nights feel like good decisions.

Planning tip: Mountain lakes and rivers stay cold year-round. Guided tours help manage risk, but weather and wind still matter. Leave some flexibility in your schedule and adjust as needed.
