Hello and welcome back to Whatβs On Banff.
This week brings a familiar mix of winter fun and unexpected twists. The cold snap has done its job, reopening outdoor skating rinks and setting the scene for a proper mountain winter. Itβs the kind of weather that rewards getting outside, even briefly.
Not everything has gone smoothly. A Parks Canada IT outage has disrupted reservation systems and pushed booking dates around, leaving some travellers unsure what comes next. If youβre planning future trips, itβs worth double-checking the latest updates before making any firm plans.
Meanwhile, Banff is gearing up for Weekend of Wonder, with Bear Street set to fill up with ice carvings, snow sculptures, and nightly entertainment. Itβs a simple excuse to wander downtown, enjoy the atmosphere, and make a winter evening feel a bit more special.
Away from the crowds, fat biking continues to be a popular way to explore Banff in winter. Itβs a relaxed option that works well on snow and gravel, offering a different perspective on familiar scenery.
There is plenty more happening this week. Dive into the event listings below, or check out the detailed events page on our website.

If you want to explore Banff beyond the main viewpoints, an electric fat bike tour is a practical and surprisingly easy way to do it. With electric assist and wide tyres, the bikes handle gravel paths, forest trails, snow, and paved routes comfortably, even if youβve never used an e-bike before.
After a short safety briefing, your guide chooses a route that suits the dayβs conditions, mixing quiet trails, riverside paths, and familiar landmarks with at least one lesser-known viewpoint. The pace is relaxed, hills feel manageable, and the focus stays on scenery, local insight, and enjoying the ride rather than fitness or navigation.

ποΈ Plan Your Trip
Banff on a Budget
Banff can be expensive, but you can experience its world-class scenery without the premium price tag by focusing on free natural sites, using local transit, and timing your visit carefully.
Where to Stay
HI Banff Alpine Centre: A top choice for budget travellers, offering both dormitory and private rooms, with the added bonus of free local transit passes.
Banff Boutique Inn: Offers a self-catering kitchen where you can prepare your own meals to save on dining costs.
The Dorothy Motel: A simple, no-frills option located at the end of Banff Avenue that provides a clean, affordable base for exploring.
Best Western Plus Banff International Lodge: Includes a complimentary hot breakfast, which can save a family significant money over a multi-day stay.
2026 Budget Strategies
Park Pass Hacks: If you are staying for more than seven days, purchase an annual Discovery Pass ($151.25 for a vehicle) rather than daily fees. For 2026, admission to national parks is free from June 19 to September 7 under the "Canada Strong Pass" program.
Roam Transit: Local bus fares are roughly $2 for adults. Check if your hotel provides free transit passes, as many do for local routes 1, 2, 4, and 6.
Grocery Picnic: Dine out for dinner, but buy supplies at local grocery stores for breakfast and lunch. Central Park is an ideal spot for a scenic picnic by the Bow River.
Happy Hours: Many local spots like Farm & Fire or Lupo offer happy hour food deals that provide a "resort" dining experience at a fraction of the cost.
Free Things to Do
Cascade Gardens: Located at the end of Banff Avenue, these gardens are free and offer one of the best photography spots in town.
Vermilion Lakes: A prime spot for sunrise or sunset views of Mount Rundle without any parking or entrance fees beyond your park pass.
Bow Falls: A short walk from the town centre that takes you directly to the powerful falls seen in many Hollywood films.
