Hi Everyone! Here's What’s Happening This Week!

Free parking at the Tunnel Mountain trailhead is finished. Banff Centre has introduced pay parking at the trail lot, with the rest of campus following on 19 August, and payment runs through HONK. Roam's Route 7 doesn't come back until October, so walking up from town is the only way to avoid paying twice.

Elsewhere, McGill researchers have worked out that aspens are more than twice as likely to sit at the edge of a burn than inside it. Clusters slow fires down; single trees don't. Forestry operations have spent years spraying them off in favour of conifers.

Driving is looking less appealing this week generally, so the half-day shuttle to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise is doing well - Banff and Canmore pickups, an hour and twenty at each lake, a guide on the way.

And for anyone who would rather skip the shuttle system altogether, Moraine Lake Lodge guests can still drive right to the lake, and get it more or less to themselves once the day-trippers have gone.

🏔️ Feeling overwhelmed planning your Banff trip?

Ask Jill from What’s on Banff

Too many options, not enough time to sort through them all. I can help you figure out what actually matters for your trip.

This round-trip shuttle picks up from Banff and Canmore and takes you straight to the lakes, with a guide pointing out park highlights along the way. 1 hour 20 minutes to explore at each lake.

🏔️ Fresh from the Rockies

Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park

🌳 Aspens Slow Wildfires, Study Finds. McGill researchers found aspens more than twice as likely to sit at burn edges than inside them. Clusters work; lone trees don't. Forestry operations spray them off in favour of conifers.

🅿️ Tunnel Mountain Trailhead Parking Goes Paid. Banff Centre has introduced pay parking at the Tunnel Mountain Trail lot, with the rest of campus following August 19. Payment runs through HONK. Roam's Route 7 doesn't return until October.

🪨 Spray Lakes Road Reopening This Month. Highway 742 above Canmore, closed since a June 1 rockslide, should reopen by month's end once crews finish scaling loose rock. The $1.1 million fix has kept Grassi Lakes out of reach since June.

🍫 Lindt Opens on Banff Avenue. The Swiss chocolatier has opened at 317 Banff Avenue in Cascade Shops, with a drinks bar, gelato and a Maple Sea Salt Leaf. It joins at least six other confectionery shops on the same street.

🐻 Camper Fined $600 Over Bear Incident. An Australian man pleaded guilty at Canmore Court after a black bear reached food stored in a bear-resistant bag at Rampart Creek Campground. He self-reported the incident, which otherwise might have gone unnoticed.

🍎 Town Will Swap Your Fruit Tree. Banff is covering the full cost of removing apple, cherry, plum and mountain ash trees for native replacements. A bear lured into town by an easy meal can end up dead.

🌧️ A cool, showery day arrives before things brighten and warm up - Thursday brings steady showers and a real chill to just 11°C, Friday continues with showers at a milder 16°C, and Saturday clears to a mix of sun and cloud, jumping to 21°C. Sunnier, warmer days are on the way. Full Forecast Here

❓Your Questions Answered

🚗 Do you need a car if you stay in Banff or Canmore? Banff is walkable and well-served by public transport, making a car-free trip very achievable - Canmore is more car-dependent and suits travellers who are happy driving into the park each day.

🏚️ What was Bankhead and why is it called a ghost town? It was a coal mining town inside Banff National Park that was abandoned in the early 1920s - the Bankhead Ghost Town is all that remains.

💧 Is Takakkaw Falls worth a detour from Banff? Absolutely. It is one of Canada's most dramatic waterfalls and the trail is flat, short, and suitable for all fitness levels.

Moraine Lake Lodge is one of the only ways to skip the shuttle system entirely; guests can drive straight to the lake. Stay here, and you also get the place almost to yourself once the day-trippers and the last shuttles have gone.
